The fire service career field is permeated with various traditions and customs. While not all traditions in this profession are positive, they are typically extremely long-standing and held in very high regard. These traditions range from the common occurrence of pranks and harmless superstitions to more detrimental traditions including harmful hazing and the extreme use of alcohol and other substances after any given shift. The prevalence of these traditions, superstitions, and practices are often a uniting factor amongst the men and women in the fire service. The use of these unifying customs could potentially be used to combat the rampant issues concerning mental health and unhealthy coping mechanisms that plague this line of work.
